This edited work aims to highlight four newly emerging themes in the politics of migration in Europe: (1) that labour migration policies are increasingly driven by sector-specific considerations; (2) that labour migration policies are influenced by developments associated with globalisation and Europeanisation; (3) that there has been a considerable degree of privatisation of migration control, and private actors and agencies play a more pronounced role in facilitating or detaining the flow of migrants; and (4) that technology has enabled the flow of information about employment opportunities around the globe, leading to substantial flows of largely undocumented workers from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe into the less regulated sectors of West European economies. The contents are: Introduction: patterns, trends and (ir)regularities in the politics and economics of labour migration in Europe / Georg Menz and Alexander Caviedes; section one, 'Labour migration and European capitalisms', contains the following chapters: Employers, trade unions, varieties of capitalism, and labour migration policies / Georg Menz; The sectoral turn in labour migration policy / Alexander Caviedes; Emigration, immigration, and the quality of membership: on the political economy of highly skilled immigration politics / Holger Kolb; Trade unions and migrant labour in the 'global age': new alliances or old antagonisms? / Torben Krings; section two, 'The effects of Europeanization', contains: Crossing over, heading west and south: mobility, citizenship, and employment in the enlarged Europe / Ettore Recchi and Anna Triandafyllidou; Labour immigration in the [European Union] EU through the back door?: the free provision of services as a facilitator of migration flows / Vassilis Hatzopoulos; section three, 'The outsourcing of migration management', contains: The privatization and outsourcing of migration management / Georg Menz; section four, 'Unauthorized labour migration', contains: Strange castle walls and courtyards: explaining the political economy of undocumented immigration and undeclared employment / Michael Samers; Unauthorized migration and the politics of regularization, legalization, and amnesty / Willem Maas.
